Attic and Roof Ventilation

For your roof to reach its longest live and peak performance your roof and attic need to have a balanced ventilation system.

There are several different products available to ensure your intake and exhaust roof ventilation is balanced. It is important you are aware of your ventilation options for your attic and roof.

Types of Roof Ventilation

Attic ventilation products are categorized as either:

  • Intake ventilation
  • Exhaust ventilation
  • Both intake and exhaust ventilation

Both intake and exhaust ventilation are key parts of your attic and roof ventilation system.

Intake Ventilation

Soffit vents are most common type of intake ventilation. Soffit vents are placed along the length of your house between joists at the eaves. Often when blow in insulation is installed these vents can become blocked, you should request an attic inspection to ensure this is not the case.

Roof mounted intake vents can be used when a home does not have soffits

Exhaust Ventilation

Several types of exhaust ventilation exists, it is important the correct type and enough of it is selected for your home. I would have a local roofing company inspect your home and give you advise on which system to use.

  • Ridge Vents
  • Turtle vents
  • Turbine Vents
  • Powered Roof Vents
  • Gable Vents

Why do I need both intake and exhaust ventilation?

Intake vents are lower on the roof (or in the soffits) and allow exterior air to enter the attic. The air travels up the underside of the roof deck in the attic and exits through the exhaust vents at the top of the roof. Proper attic and roof ventilation helps regulate the temperature of your attic and remove moisture.

Why do I need attic ventilation?

To keep your attic temperature and moisture regulated it is very important you have proper roof ventilation. Without proper ventilation you attic and roof can experience many problems:

  • Mold
  • Mildew
  • Damage to the integrity of your roof

We offer free inspections and would be happy to give you a report on your attic and roof ventilation. Call at 618-476-1480 and we would be happy to set an appointment.

Roofing Contractor: Ask these Questions before you Hire

Roofing Contractor CollinsvilleFinding a roofing contractor who you can trust is a very important part of replacing or repairing your roof. We have put together a guide of some questions you should ask before you hire a roof contractor.

Do you have insurance coverage?

Your roofing contractor should carry general liability insurance to help protect your home against accidental damage. Before hiring any contractor for your home make sure they are insured.

Are you a licensed roofing contractor?

The state of Illinois required all roofing contractors to be licensed. If they are not licensed, it is possible they will not do a high-quality job.

Which roofing materials will you use on my roof?

Not all roofing materials are the same. You want to ensure that your shingles, underlayment, and all the components of your new roof are good quality.

Will the roofing contractor provide me with a written estimate?

The roofing contractor should provide you with an estimate that includes a breakdown of exactly what work will be completed. As a homeowner it is important that you understand every component of what is being done to your roof.

Do you follow all local building codes?

Your roofing contractor should know and comply with all local building codes and get whatever permits are required.

Do you install synthetic underlayment?

Roofing contractors will install either a synthetic or felt underlayment as the first layer under the shingles. You want synthetic underlayment, it is an advanced protection against leaks, water absorption, and mold.

Will you install ice and water barrier?

There should always be some ice and water barrier between the shingles and wood deck. Depending on the code, design of the roof, and weather conditions this may be needed in several areas or just a few. Make sure you understand where ice and water barrier is going to be installed on your roof.

Do you inspect the completed job?

When the job is complete a foreman or project manager should inspect the work that is being complete to ensure that the job was done to the highest standards.
